Analyzing the global search trend from 2019 until February 2023, we recognize the effect that COVID-19 had in the interest of travelers to visit and
stay in Athens. While 2019 shows a stable search trend, the year 2020 that comes right after shows much lower interest. On 2021 there is a slight
increase but still the numbers are not at the level of 2019. With the return to normality though, the urge of travelers to get back to visiting the
destination explodes the search trend for 2022. Analyzing January and February 2023 as well, we identify an increase of 173% from 2019 and +177%
from 2022. For the same two months, we notice the highest monthly interests throughout these 3 years, a fact that promises a year of high demand
for tourism in Athens.
Taking a look at the countries with the highest interest for accommodation in Athens, USA has increased its share of search volume even more than
the 2022 period. One could argue that the Americans could also be searching for Athens based in Georgia, hence the big search volume. But after
clearing out any keywords that could directly or indirectly indicate Athens Georgia, the results are setting USA as the country with the most interest
for accommodation in Athens, Greece. The United Kingdom, Germany and France are following in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place.
Comparing the January and
February 2023 search trend
of each selected country
with 2019 and 2022 levels
we identify a clear increase
of interest.
Comparing to 2022,
Australia showed the
biggest increase, a fact
which could be indicating
that it is a rising market for
Athens.
While looking back to 2019,
the countries with the
biggest increase were USA,
United Kingdom and
Canada
